January 2021

Dear Parents & Carers,

Following the announcement that all London Schools will be closed until February Half Term, we will be using the school website to ensure that children are continuing to learn remotely.

Class teachers will be uploading learning to cover the period to the 25th January as we await further guidance.

Class teachers will also be using 'Class Dojo' a fun, school based communication platform that teachers, children, and families can use every day to share learning. The simple app can be downloaded onto a smartphone or used through a web browser.

Class teachers will upload tasks and videos for the children to see each day and families can share the learning they are doing at home, through photos.

There are a lot of websites with useful learning materials, however please monitor children whilst they are using the internet.

We would love to see your Home Learning so please feel free to email me any pictures!

Take care and we look forward to seeing you all soon.

Merry Christmas from Mr Wood!

Christmas crafts: Have a look at the link below and try one of the craft activities. These ideas shouldn't require many resources. Once again, anything you want to share, just send me a photo!

USA topic: Have a read of these facts about two important cities in the US - NYC and LA - and then complete the fact file. You can also find out more about other places in the USA. Why not write a postcard from one of them and design the front of it. Send me anything you would like me to put up on our web page.

Science - Evolution. Why do living things change over time? (we are talking about lots of time here!) How have living things adapted to the environment they live in? Have a think about what we've learnt so far and have a look at the links below.

Have a look at this work pack about how different animals have adapted to their environment.

Reading comprehension

VIPERS is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the UK’s reading curriculum.  They are the key areas which we feel children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts.

VIPERS stands for

Sequence or Summarise

Have a go at the reading comprehension below. The questions are listed following the VIPERS system.

Ratios are used to show how things are made from different parts. For example when cooking: One part flour to three parts water = 1:3 (There are four parts in total, 1+3=4)

Try the links below.

RE learning: Normally we would be doing RE this morning, so I've put this storyboard here for the Nativity story. Describe each scene. Try to use a dash or semicolon to link two sentences for each. If you prefer you can do your own storyboard. Send photos to me and I'll put them on the web page.

Here is a worksheet on semicolons.

English home learning: The Highwayman, by Alfred Noyes, is a classic poem, which is often studied in Year 6. This will be good for children's reading comprehension and there are different English activities to keep them going over the next week.

If possible, get children to go on to Mymaths and Nessy (for children with usernames) as

it all helps keep them going while not in school.

Year 6 is an extremely important year: this is not only due to the fact that it is the SATS year, but also because it is the year that they prepare for the next phase of their education-secondary school. They have gotten off to a great start ,and have been making leaps and bounds in their learning. They are a very enthusiastic and eager class, and I am positive that they will exceed  National expectations if they continue to work hard and be resilient.
